I am so excited to share another new Made for Mermaids pattern with you all, Mama Catherine! This one really pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best possible way with its gathered, drapey silhouette and square yoke bodice, both things I have never sought out in the past, but that I quickly fell in love with.
Catherine comes with all of the the usual options from Made for Mermaids, including top, tunic, and dress lengths, and short, 3/4, and long sleeve lengths. The unique features to this pattern, however, include both square and curved, high neck options that are designed to be used separately but that also can be interchanged (found that one out of accident, whooops!)
Then, of course, there is the gathered front and back “skirt” pieces. I will freely admit that these scared the crap out of me when I first started making this pattern. As a general rule I avoid all sorts of clothing items that have all of this gathered, extra fabric because it makes me look like a tent hanging over my large bosom and sway back.
With the right fabric choices however (super light weight modal jerseys from JoAnn’s) I dont feel like a tent at all in these beauties and am loving the way they drape. I mean just look at that drape!
This was also the perfect pattern to showcase all of the pretty stretch lace I had been hoarding in my stash for forever to use for a contrasting yoke on both of my two new Catherine’s. On my blue version I did a lined, square toke with the lining being a nude swimwear lining leftover from my Take the Plunge swimsuit adventures over the summer to make an illusion neckline that I am OBSESSED with. It looks just like my unlined purple version but as the added benefit of covering any and all bra situations that are going on underneath the dress.
