Yay! Woo! You’re here! Welcome!
I am so glad you have decided that you want to start sewing! No matter what age you are, what your lifestyle is, where you come from, or who you are, sewing is the creative hobby you have been looking for, I promise!
But where should you start? Well, believe you or not, you already have just by coming to this page!
I know starting to sew, whether as a hobby or as a business, can be very overwhelming and walking into a fabric store for the first time even more so, but I am going to do my best to break it down for you here on SEWUPRISING with the Sew 101 series.
When I first started sewing, I did a lot of research, and I mean A LOT. I searched for information through the ever useful Google, through YouTube videos, and even a few actual books (Gasp, old school, I know) but all of the “beginner” resources I found assumed I already knew my way around a fabric store, what a flat pin is, what “stretch percentage” means, and that there was differences in types and brands of thread, when what I really wanted to know, at least at first, was so much more basic.
What do I actually need to get on my first trip to a fabric store? How do I choose a machine? Why are there so many different types of machines? (spoiler: I still dont know the answer to this one) Why does that lady at the cutting counter keep asking me what I’m working on? (and how bad would it be if I just yelled “I dont know yet lady!” and started crying in the middle of the store)
Yeah, I was a mess when I started sewing as an adult but don’t worry because I am going to do my best to answer all of those questions for you, so you dont end of crying in the middle of a fabric store (it only happened once, I swear).
So lets get started!
